What photography means to me  


I've never really given that a thought. I've always seen photography as capturing a moment, saving memories to lock back on in the future but it's far more. It gives people jobs, it allows people to express their creativity, it allows the police to help people in danger and it does many more things that I never considered until recently. 

I was tasked with reading "Photography Changes Everything", by Marvin Heiferman, and in the essay he talks about six distinct categories that photography changes. One that really stuck with me was the "Photography changes what we see", it talks about how photographs allow us to see things that the naked eye can't see. I didn't really think about that until I read that part because it reminded me of what I was able to see the northern lights in PA back in October. I could barely see them with my eye but once I took a picture of them with my phone I was able to see them in all their beauty. It was something I thought I wouldn't have been able to see unless I went to Iceland. And I was able to see them in person because of photography. 

Photography to me isn't just capturing a moment or saving a memory. It's expressing your creativity and using it to create images that seem impossible. Photography is the beauty that is seen that your eyes can't see. Photography is much more than just an image, and i understand that now

                    Photo Essay: Eugene Richards      This book was a big inspiration for me since for my final I wanted to tell a story with my photos. Though my pictures and story are nowhere near as complex and deep as this book, it gave me some understanding on how to tell a story through photography. The photos in this book required a lot of trust to make them happen and its the trust part that really makes this book stand out.            Fred Ritchin's, "After Photography"       While reading this article the section "Photography the Future so a Version of it Does Not Happen" really stuck out to me. I believe it stuck out to me because it said you can use digital photography to show a bad future that can happen if we continue to do the things we normally do. It talked about a photo of an iceberg and using Photoshop to show how the iceberg will completely melt and raise sea levels if we continue with this level of global warming. I believe that a simple photo being altered like that could change a few people's decisions, which is what the world needs.     Also in that same part of the article, it said that the police used digital photos to help find children that have been lost.
