Edward Honaker

Edward Honaker is a world-renowned photographer most known for his self-portraits that depict his mental health struggles.

I chose this photo because I feel like a lot of people relate to a photo like this. Though its simple when looking at this photo, it feels like Edward was trying to say that even though he was there physically, he wasn't there mentally and I know that many people that deal with mental health issues feel exactly like that most of the time. So to me this simple photo had much more of an impact than first glance.

This is one of my more favorite photos from his self-portraits because although the balloon is when its reflection on the water is black and to me that has a deeper meaning than first thought. To me this means that no matter how happy someone is on the outside they still hide their sadness because they might feel ashamed of it. I feel like a lot of people can also relate to this photo because I feel like people bottle their feelings up all the time. People are ashamed to express themselves so they hide their feelings and only show themselves as happy, even though it makes it worse.
Edward Honaker used his mental health as a tool to make art that many people can relate to and I feel like his art was able to help many people without him realizing it.
